Character and Plot
The main character of the book is a girl named Rachel Martin. All she wants is for this guy named Brendan Fear to like her. Soon she gets invited to a party of his and is eager to be there. There is just one problem...he is a Fear. This means that there is a curse on the family and everyone thinks that he is insane. She just thinks that they are just stories, or are they? Most of the book takes place at Brendan Fear's house where all of the horror and mystery is, but there are other places such as Shadyside High, the school that all of the characters go to, the restaurant where Rachel works, and her house where the suspense starts to arrive. It is at Fear Island, the place of where Brendan's house is at, where Rachel truly figures out on what Brendan is like exactly.
Themes and Symbols
There are a few different themes that this book could show or tell depending on how you view it. It could mean to trust your friends and actually listen to what they have to say. It could also mean to not be afraid of things that think clearly of what you are going to do before you do it. There are symbols in the book as well, such as how the grease in the restaurant could mean that Rachel is going to get into a sticky situation with a slippery person. The dead animal in Rachel's bed (Stine 30) could also represent how there is going to be death in a place where she feels somewhat comfortable. Of course there are a lot more themes and symbols in the book as well. Those are just a few of the themes and symbols in the book that stuck out to me the most.
